TANYA LONG

Tanya Long Ceramics

Tanya Anne Long is a ceramicist and sculptor based in Cleveland, Ohio. She received her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and her BFA from Pratt Institute. She has been the recipient of a U.S. Fulbright Grant for independent research in the area of visual arts and design in Hungary.

Her practice has taken her abroad numerous times, including participation in artist residencies at the European Ceramic Work Centre (EKWC) in the Netherlands, the Guldagergaard Ceramic Research Center in Denmark and the International Ceramic Studio in Hungary. Her work has been exhibited at venues across the United States and abroad, including ROY G BIV Gallery in Columbus, OH. She has held teaching positions at the Cleveland Institute of Art, University of Akron, Beck Center for the Arts, and the University of Pécs in Hungary.

She utilizes both slab-built and wheel-thrown construction to craft objects that exist in a space between sculpture and function. Her most recent series of work draws formal inspiration from the confluence of art nouveau and socialist modernism in the architectural landscape of Hungary, which she observed during her time living there. There are endless material possibilities present in ceramics. Everything from the type of clay, to the kiln, to the exact amount of each dry material in a glaze recipe can be manipulated to produce a different outcome. This, coupled with inherent transformational quality of the material, inspire her to keep testing the bounds of ceramic as an art form through the creation of these liminal objects.
