Achala Wali lives and works in Northeast Ohio. She is a visual artist, whose works on paper have been shown regionally, in venues as varied as Zygote Press and the Butler Museum in Youngstown, OH. Born in India, raised in the United States, Achala’s artistic practice is shaped by a wide range of cultural influences from Indian miniatures to global music, garden design, Korean drama and natural and topographical land formations.
Her work imagines larger possibilities – forecasting new, interesting, beautiful and existential paradigms.
The drawings are largely non-representational and abstract –diagrammatic; topographical and full vistas.
Achala participates on many levels with the arts community, as an artist, grant writer and past board member of SPACEs and Zygote Press. Achala has also been a member of several drawing collaboratives, the first dating from 1995, Drawing in the Community, led by Ed Mieczkowski, a former faculty of the Cleveland Institute of Art and eventually participated in Newcelle, a more focused drawing collaborative. She worked closely with the artist, John Jackson on drawings and ceramics; involving a stylistic interchange of ideas and methods.
